Burberry collaborate with Jonathan Gibbs to engrave new wooden stamp

Earlier this month British fashion house, Burberry, revealed a new collaboration that saw CIA’s celebrated wood-engraver Jonny Gibbs create a bespoke stamp interpreting Burberry’s famous Equestrian Knight motif. Here, Jonny reports back (in his inimitable style) on the experience:

"A fine and inspiring Burberry group visited my studio, five good folk including a big and strong security man, Chris, all to spend a summer's day in recording the sound and vision of wood engraving.

There was no dialogue or commentary and this was highly disciplined as well as liberal; just the un-wrapping, drawing, engraving and printing of the knight and his charger.

The recording took two hours or so, taken in stages with breaks to gather breath and ensure that the drawing was the correct but expressive interpretation of a complex form.

This was a really challenging brief, only because it was closely observed and within a limited time-frame.  I greatly enjoyed the interest and focus of all these people who wanted to see how I make my work and I was hugely flattered to be asked to do it.

I found this to be the most rewarding and creative experience.

The nineteen seconds encapsulates my work into a sound poem and concentrated view of my hands, block, tools, ink and paper and table-top where all of my work is made."
